Adelaide Native Garden Landscape Design (Victor Harbor).
A couple of avid gardeners purchased a double block located at one of Adelaide’s picturesque southern beach side suburbs, Victor Harbor.
On one block was a large house while the adjacent block was unkept vacant land as you can see from the pictures below.

Fully aware of what lay before them, the couple searched for landscape designers online and found Living Pictures By Tony Stanton. After calling, a concept design meeting was scheduled down at the Victor Harbor property.
The brief and challenge of this native garden landscape design was to create one large uniform garden that resembled a kept park, took advantage of the stunning views to the hills, was relatively low maintenance and used native plants.
Two entertainment areas were requested, one that provided shade for entertaining with friends, enjoying a BBQ and one that could be a place to admire the magnificent vista while sipping a glass of wine during the evening.
Before leaving the initial 2 hour long design session, landscape designer Tony Stanton drew up a concept plan laying out all the garden design ideas discussed with a selection of native plants that would add colour while being low maintenance for this water saving garden plus a concept sketch that gave a pictorial representation of what the garden makeover could look like once the landscaping work was complete.

Delighted with what Tony had come up with, the couple decided to proceed with using Living Pictures By Tony Stanton for producing the landscaping construction plans and softscape plans.

Completely satisfied with how the native garden landscape design turned out on paper, Tony was asked to handle the process, turning the plans into their dream garden.
After receiving quotes for the project, the landscaping work was handed to Hand Made Gardens to complete.
As licensed landscapers Adelaide south residents have used for over 35 years, Martyn and his team had the knowledge and experience to complete all aspects the garden design called for.
The front garden of the home was a mix of Lavender, Eremophila, Hebe, Myoporum and Erigeron planted amongst local limestone boulders. The developed garden takes those elements and mixes with other plants right across the double frontage to make a statement about the width of the block and its common ownership.

Hebe Turkish Delight is a gorgeous deep green and burgundy foliage which contrasts beautifully with the silver foliage of Eremophila nivea and the sage green of Rhagodia spinescens.
The white flowers and bright green foliage of Salvia Gregii provide relief for the blazing orange/Gold of the dwarf Anigozanthos ‘Bush Gold’ and the purple Limonium with its rosette of dark green leaves.
Soft grassy foliage of Poa australis provides a gentle blue/green for a contrasting texture alongside the Hebes, Eremophilas and Acacia ‘Limelights’

Contrast of tone and texture is a feature of this native plant design with the tone varying from Silver Eremophila through pale greens, mid greens, dark greens and the darkest of burgundy tones.
Texture is provided by the the size and shape of leaves, the varying size of leaves and the way they are arranged on the plant such as the characteristic cross pairing of leaves on the Hebes.
Structurally the garden is made up of zones which are linked by the soft orange/pink of the paved path and are defined by the limestone tones of the walls and paving.
By using the local boulders as punctuation in the native softscaping and keeping those tones in the hardscape we have given the garden a true sense of place and it sits quietly in the landscape backed up by a large stand of indigenous Eucalypts on the reserve behind.
Needless to say, the couple were delighted with how the land was transformed into a Living Picture.
