Gardens are playing a more significant part of our life these days, with more people transforming their front garden or backyard into beautiful and practical outdoor living areas to be enjoyed all year round.
Typically and historically, front gardens are mostly about presentation, with an emphasis on how it looks rather than offering any practical purpose other than allowing access to the house, or garage for cars.
The backyard offers privacy and is where we spend the most time outdoors with the family, or entertaining with our friends.
We all like spending time outside because it’s where our senses come alive. What we see, hear, smell, taste and touch can invigorate us and positively change our mood making us happier.
The science of horticulture plays a significant role in choosing what garden plants work best with the gardens design, exciting the senses to make spending time outdoors even more enjoyable.
The benefits of landscape horticulture Adelaide residents receive when using Living Pictures By Tony Stanton is one of the major points of difference when comparing landscape designers to complete your garden makeover.
Holding a Bachelor Of Applied Science Degree in Microbiology (B.App.Sc.), a qualified horticulturist (Cert. III Horticulture) and licensed building supervisor (Building License 183200), Tony Stanton has the knowledge, backed up with over 30 years experience.
Having a credible expert work on your softscape landscape design means your garden will be planted out using the right plants to complement your gardens theme, immediately delighting your senses and for years to come.
Succulents are a great addition to any garden. Often they don’t look like succulents at all and have amazing flower displays.
Best of all, they often don’t need any additional watering, even during a South Australian Summer. Most don’t like frost so they’re not suitable for Adelaide Hills gardens, unless sheltered.
Note: They may die down during Winter on the plains, but will come back strongly in Spring. Check out ‘Kalanchoe Blossfeldian’ or ‘Sedum Autumn Joy’.
Only weeds grow well with poor soil, so don’t import rubbish and expect good results.
Adelaide soils vary from loam through to alkaline clay on the plains to acid clay typically found throughout the Adelaide Hills. If you live on the loam belt, compost and fertilizer is all you need to grow a fabulous garden.
In the clay, whether acid or alkaline, you need sand and compost to loosen the structure. In the right proportions, sand and compost will turn your clay into loam.
Whatever you do, don’t import manufactured loam and spread it on top of your clay base! as this will create a ‘bathtub effect’ because water will sit between the loam and the clay, sometimes for weeks and causes root disease or root rot.
When professionals are landscaping your garden, ready to plant out, soil preparation is an important part of the process to ensure your plants grow strong and healthy.
After completion of both your hardscape construction plans and softscape design plans, you’ll also have a good idea of what the costs will be to transform your current garden into the dream outdoor living area you’re after.
